Why we ship wine to Italy only
On our wholesale site we ship wine to addresses in Italy only. All the other products in our range — olive oil, preserves, pasta, taralli, baked goods — ship abroad as usual. Here is why.
Wine pays excise duty in the country of arrival
Wine is subject to excise duty, the tax on alcoholic beverages. When it moves from one EU country to another, the duty is not paid in Italy but in the country of arrival, under that country’s rules and rates.
A specific document is required
Wine travelling between two countries must be accompanied by an electronic excise document, the e-DAS, and the duty must be paid in the country of destination. The forwarder handles this procedure, and it has a fixed cost.
The paperwork costs more than the wine
With a few cases of wine on a pallet of food products, the duty itself is often just a few euros, but the paperwork costs around €90 per shipment: more than the wine is worth in a typical order. That is why we prefer not to offer it, rather than add a surprise cost after you have ordered.
Outside the European Union
For Switzerland and other non-EU countries, customs clearance comes on top of excise duty, with further costs and documents.
